Barricades for rent: police, crowd control, construction and K-rails

Barricade families in feet, by the book

Most lines in EC's Barricades category give a length or a width, so a police line or a closure can be planned in feet before anyone phones. The last column below lays each family's pieces end to end at the book's sizes, a layout none of these lines describes.

Metal crowd control barricades, 84 inches wide

B-0115 is a single line: metal crowd control barricades, 84 inches wide and 41 inches tall, with 115 in the book. With one stock number and one size, the hold list needs only a count, worked out from the book's width: for a press line or a parade scene, 10 sections set side by side span 70 feet and 50 span 350 feet, less any overlap where two sections meet, which the book does not describe. Blue police barricades: 14 foot and 8 foot boards

EC's police barricades are blue wood boards on A-frame legs in two lengths: B-0003, 14 feet on two blue wood legs, with 38 in the book, and B-0410, 8 feet and marked "Do Not Cross", with 11, the length for a storefront or an alley mouth. Together they make 620 feet of blue board. The book gives B-0003's legs as blue wood but B-0410's only as wood, so if the legs must match on camera, say so on the hold list.

Striped and squared board barricades, 6 to 12 feet

The striped boards filed under Barricades come in four lengths, and the 10 foot length in three stripe colors: B-0117, orange and white wood, with 34 in the book; B-0272r, red and white (4); and B-0272b, black and white (1). Red and white also runs 12 feet on B-0273 (4). B-0117 stands on white plastic A-frame legs and B-0272r, B-0272b and B-0273 on white wood ones, so a mixed run shows two kinds of leg.

The plastic boards come in named shapes: B-0288a, 8 feet, "squared I shape", orange and white, 13 in the book; B-0288c, 8 feet and squared, its color not named (3); and the 6 foot pair, B-0251a "squared" (2) and B-0251b "I-shaped" (4). End to end, all 65 striped and squared boards in the table below, wood and plastic together, make 602 feet.

B-0251, numbered beside that pair, is left out of the board counts and lengths here; check its own page, and ask the front office whether it adds to the 6 foot pair or repeats it.

One more board barricade is in EC's book but filed in no category, so it turns up only in a catalog search for B-0313: white wood, 130 inches wide and 32 inches tall on two A-frame legs, with 6 in the book. It has no stripe named and sits outside this page's tables and totals.

Folding A-frames and bar barricades for road work

The folding A-frames carry the road work counts, all three lines tagged construction: B-0060, orange and white in wood and metal, with 67 in the book; B-0178, orange and white plastic, with 30; and one mini A-frame, B-0394, orange plastic with orange and white stripes. None of the three gives a size, so ask the front office when a height matters; B-0060 and B-0178 have photo pages, and B-0394 does not.

The bar barricades are the road work lines the book sizes, each with a width and a height. B-0118A and B-0118b share a build, 3 bar orange and white on two removable metal feet at 62 inches tall, one 48 inches wide on a white frame (10), the other 60 inches on an orange frame (4). B-0130 is a 4 bar on a metal stand, 48 by 82 inches (2). B-0227, a black and yellow 3 bar 120 inches wide and 96 tall on two angle iron legs (9), carries a note the book cuts off at "DOES NOT COME WITH HARDW...", so ask the front office what comes with it.

K-rails in styrofoam, fiberglass and plastic

EC's 12 K-rail lines hold 106 freeway dividers and blocks, each line naming its material: gray painted styrofoam (17), fiberglass (23), orange or white plastic (36) and black plastic interlocking blocks (30, all K-0026); K-0013 sits on a wood base. EC's policies say it cannot weigh rented items and does not give weight estimates, so the widths, depths and heights below are what a crew chief has to go on.

Among the K-rails on this page, three sets of lines match in profile, each set within one material. The fiberglass lines have a 24 inch base, 4 inch top and 33 inch height at three widths, K-0018A 122 inches with 20 in the book, K-0018b 96 and K-0018c 54, so a long run can end on a shorter piece. In styrofoam, K-0032 (120 inches, 8) and K-0032a (24 inches, 1) share a 24 inch base, 6 inch top and 32 inch height, while K-0013's line gives only one depth, 24 inches. K-0017o and K-0017w are one 40 by 48 inch plastic size, orange (13) and white (9), about 73 feet end to end, though a strictly alternating run uses up the white first.

The water walls are K-0009, 76 inches wide, and K-0031, a "San-Fil / Water-Wall" with 9 inch black plastic lids, the book stopping its size at 72 inches wide; K-0028 is a 72 by 36 inch orange divider. K-0026's note breaks off at "[ADD ...", so ask the front office how it continues. Two parts made for those blocks carry their own numbers and sit outside the table and its totals: K-0026b, a 36 inch "Double-Length Bolt" the book lists "to attach barriers together when stacked 2-high" (18), and K-0026e, an end cap 15 inches across and 9 inches tall "for the end of a run" (5); list them by number if the run calls for them.

Guardrail lines, also under Railing & Stanchions

The 3 G-0189 guardrail lines, 24 sections 162 inches wide, are filed here and under Railing & Stanchions, the page for guardrail, and appear below so a roadside closure can be counted on one page. The book stops each line partway through its parts, so confirm with the front office which parts go out with a section.

Barricade lanterns and the colors to specify

EC files 5 lantern lines with the barricades, and two ask for a color. L-0017a, listed as flashing with an amber lens, says to specify the body color and splits its count 32 yellow, 21 orange; L-0425, a strobe with a yellow body, says to specify the lens color and splits 13 yellow, 3 red. L-0017b is low-profile, yellow with an amber lens (12); L-0372 non-flashing, a blue lens on a white body (5); L-0552 an amber lens on an 11 by 6 by 6 inch yellow metal box (10).

Long boards, K-rails and a split pick-up

Measure the truck bed against the book first: B-0003's boards are 14 feet long, B-0273's boards 12 feet, K-0018A 122 inches and B-0227 120 by 96 inches, then call ahead, as EC's pick-up policy suggests, to settle the truck size.

When the boards and K-rails outgrow one truck, splitting the load is the front office's call: "A proper vehicle must be present to release an invoice, unless a partial pick-up has been agreed upon by the front office." So agree on the split before the first truck pulls up to the dock.
