Automotive props for rent: engines, jacks, hoists and creepers

Engines on stands from 4 to 8 cylinders, plus blocks, a cylinder head and a motorcycle engine

E-0251a, E-0251b and E-0251c are the 4 cylinder engines, all on castered stands, each with a different base: a Honda on an orange I-shaped base, 42 inches tall; a Toyota on a gray T-shaped base at 49 inches (the book does not say tall); and one with no make named on a gray A-shaped base, 48 inches tall. E-0362, the 6 cylinder, is 45 inches tall on an orange A-shaped base.

Both 8 cylinder engines are marked mock-up: E-0062, high performance, on an orange A-shaped base, and E-0056, a Ford V-8 marked period and new condition, on a black metal stand. Both lines are cut off just after the stand, so neither shows a height, and the 4 and 6 cylinder lines do not say whether they are mock-ups.

Off the stands, E-0177 is the one engine line counted at 2, a 12 cylinder silver foam block mock-up described as a 1960s Ferrari race car type. Of these engines and parts, two lines say period, both Ford pieces: the V-8 E-0056 and C-0272, a blue small block cylinder head. E-0371 is a block piece with 6 piston caps, and E-0398 a chrome Suzuki motorcycle engine.

Outboard motors and a boat motor mock-up

For a marina or boat shop set, M-0031 is the small outboard motor, beige and orange with no propeller, 33 inches tall, and M-0048 the large one, gray and light blue, an Evinrude 3402C with a distressed propeller, whose size is cut off after 10 inches wide by 17. M-0107 is the book's boat motor mock-up: an induction motor with a pump and various fittings, 28 by 15 by 13½ inches.

Which of these jacks, stands and hoists carry EC's set dressing note

SET DRESSING ONLY NOT INTENDED FOR USE is printed in full on six of these lines: the floor jacks F-0069 and F-0407, the jack stand pairs J-0001, the motorcycle jacks J-0008 and J-0009 and the steel jack J-0029. On the hoists E-0250 and E-0696 and the XL jack J-0007 the note starts and the book cuts it off, and the 5 ton on J-0007 is the book's description of that jack, printed on the same line as the note. No note shows on the jack/lift J-0038, the single stands J-0014, the ramps or the exhaust pipe stands, and EC's rental terms govern them as they do every line.

Engine hoists and an engine stand on its own

E-0250, the orange hoist with a hydraulic jack and bar handle, is 66 inches wide, 33 deep and 61 tall, though the book gives it no count; E-0696, gray and black with a jack handle, 5 locking pins and a chain and hook, is cut off with no size given. The book has one more engine hoist line, E-0080, that no category holds: it turns up in the stock book search on the home page and reads only Engine hoist, with no size, count or note, so ask what it is when you call. E-0061 is an engine stand with no engine in its line, 30 by 40 by 38 inches, described as orange with an A-shaped base and casters: the words the book also uses for the stand under E-0362 and, as far as its cut-off line goes, the one under E-0062. The book does not say any of them match, so compare their photos.

Floor jacks, motorcycle and transmission jacks, a jack/lift

F-0069 lists 8 standard hydraulic floor jacks, F-0407 5 small ones and J-0007 one XL 5 ton, 56 inches long with a white T-handle. J-0008 adds 3 motorcycle/transmission jacks and J-0009 a motorcycle/ATV jack. Each of those five lines has a color to specify, but the book does not list the colors or say how many of the 8, the 5 or the 3 share one, so name the color the shot needs and ask how many come in it. J-0038 is a red and black hydraulic jack/lift whose line breaks off in the middle of its wheel well parts, and J-0029, yellow, rusty steel, 26 by 12 by 20 inches, has no photo or page of its own. None of these jacks says bottle, though EC's index lists bottle style jacks among this page's other names: the bottle jacks J-0005, 1 ton and green, and J-0006, with a handle, sit outside every category, both with no count and both marked SET DRESSING ONLY NOT INTENDED FOR USE, so ask for them by number. Jack stands, exhaust pipe stands and ramps

J-0001 counts its automotive jack stands in pairs, 13 pairs, color to specify, and J-0014 adds 2 singles: orange/white on a 12 by 10 inch base, or blue/yellow on a base whose size breaks off in the book after 13 inches. The muffler and exhaust pipe stands are counted in pairs too: M-0015a, red, adjustable, 50 inches tall, 3 pairs; M-0015b, gray, 31 inches tall, 2 pairs. The ramp lines, R-0018 for wheels, metal or plastic, and R-0049 for loading a pickup truck, with or without the truck gate lip, are listed by the pair, but their counts, 7 and 2, do not say pairs or single ramps.

Mechanic's creepers and shop stools

C-0122 holds 6 wooden creepers 36 inches long with the headrest to specify, so ask how many share one headrest before a shot lines several up. The other creeper lines are each a build of their own: C-0459, 3 padded metal frames, red or blue padding to name; C-0132, one gray plastic creeper with a black headrest; and C-0467, one red metal frame with a black wooden plank and no padding. Counts and sizes the book leaves out of these lines

Of the lines in the tables above, E-0250, M-0031 and M-0048 go uncounted in the book, and it gives no size at all for the 8 cylinder engines E-0056 and E-0062, the hoist E-0696, the standard and small floor jacks F-0069 and F-0407, the motorcycle jacks J-0008 and J-0009, the jack/lift J-0038, the jack stand pairs J-0001, the wheel ramps R-0018 or the padded creepers C-0459. The sizes for M-0048 and for the blue/yellow base on J-0014 stop partway, the 49 inches of E-0251b has no axis, and neither ramp count says pairs or single ramps. As with the floor and motorcycle jacks, the book does not say how the counts on J-0001, J-0014, R-0018, R-0049 and C-0459 divide among their colors or options, so ask how many come in the one the shot needs. Ask about each gap when you call.

Collecting hoists, engines and 6 foot ramps at Sherman Way

Size the truck around the book's figures: the hoist E-0250 at 66 by 33 by 61 inches, the 6 foot ramps R-0049, the XL jack J-0007 at 56 inches long and the engines on stands at 42 to 49 inches where a line gives a figure. The hoists E-0250 and E-0696 and the floor jacks F-0069, F-0407 and J-0007 carry EC's set dressing note, and every line, the hoist E-0080 and the jack/lift J-0038 included, is rented as-is, so the renter's crew lifts the engines onto the truck without EC's hoists or jacks.
